In late 2021, Carter Synergy received the call to begin work at Ryecroft Hall Public House in Hambleton. Tasked with decommissioning the site’s existing refrigeration beer cellar systems, air conditioning, natural gas, and electrical services, our team prepared the location for demolition—marking the beginning of an ambitious four-year journey.
The goal? To develop a cutting-edge Central England Co-operative store with residential flats above, covering 0.55 acres.
However, this wasn’t just another retail development. The vision was to create an ‘Eco Store’—a flagship project integrating the latest in sustainable technologies across both construction and fit-out phases. Carter Synergy played a crucial role from concept to completion, designing and installing the mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, and public health services that would define the store’s green credentials.
Sustainable Innovations at the Heart of the Project
To bring the Eco Store vision to life, Carter Synergy implemented a range of environmentally conscious solutions, including:
- New Utility Integration: Coordinating water, electricity, and removing gas services to optimse efficiency and reliability.
- Renewable Energy Solutions: Solar and wind-powered car park lighting to reduce dependency on the grid.
- Low GWP Refrigeration: Installation of an advanced CO2 refrigeration plant to minimise environmental impact.
- Efficient Heating & Water Systems: R290 air source heat pumps for sustainable hot water production.
- Water Conservation: A rainwater harvesting system designed to support the store’s seasonal operations.
- Energy-Saving Lighting: High-efficiency, dimmable store lighting to optimise energy use.
- Smart Building Integration: State-of-the-art heating, heat recovery ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
- Enhanced Electrical Infrastructure: LV electrical supplies, data and distribution for optimal power management.
- Real-Time Energy Monitoring: Advanced metering to track energy use, displaying grid consumption versus solar PV generation in real-time for customer awareness.
- EV Charging Infrastructure: Installation of four electric vehicle charging points to support the shift toward greener transportation.
A Benchmark for Sustainable Retail
