M&S Simply Foods, CO2 Sustainable Energy project at Galashiels

April 2008

Earlier this year M&S issued policy statements with regard to energy and the environment.

To meet these and to assess a possible move away from HFC refrigerant, one of their first CO2 projects is being installed.

The plant is roof mounted housed equipment with an air-cooled condenser, a combination of assemblies manufactured by Star Refrigeration and Searle. The arrangement is known as a CO2 sub-critical designed system, with propane used as a refrigerant in the prime circuit and CO2 in the secondary circuit. The secondary circuit is interconnected to display cabinets and coldroom evaporators.

Another interesting feature towards saving energy is that this plant is also connected to and operates overnight to build an ice bank. (Off peak demand for refrigeration fixture loads) Ice Bank then meets A/C demands during the day.

Carter Synergy has completed Pre-Start Project Management and Design Co-ordination with the builder, Wates, and the other services providers. KB Refrigeration continues with this on site and is providing the install team to complete interconnecting copper pipework services. KB will also be part of the commissioning team, and is likely to become the after sales service & maintenance providers.
